3 Breakdown of Peaceful Existence
America dropped its embargo (not trading with a country) with France, only to be tricked by Napoleon (leader of France) and losing more ships.

4 Breakdown of Peaceful Existence
Britain, hurt by food shortages and poor trade due to lack of cotton (which would have come from the U.S.), tried to make concessions in June

British support of Shawnee Confederation led by Tecumseh and the Prophet proved at Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

War Hawks called for war. Issues: 1) Land Hunger- they wanted the US to take over more land. 2)British Impressments- forcing former British citizens to serve in the British Army. 3) Indian Atrocities- Tecumseh leading attacks against the US.

Despite pleas from New England to remain calm, Madison asked Congress for a War Declaration on June 18, 1812.

Sea Action: 1)American privateers damaged British shipping in early months 2) British navy overwhelmed U.S. ships and blockaded coast from New England to Georgia

12 War’s Conclusion Attack on Washington - 4,000 British Troops burn White House, other buildings.

13 War’s Conclusion Napoleon abdicates in April 1814, leaving America alone to fight the British

14 War’s Conclusion At Treaty of Ghent, American and British agree to end fighting on December 24,

15 War’s Conclusion British Invade New Orleans, only to be defeated by American troops under Andrew Jackson’s command in January 1815.
