7. Conservation in the TNL
Our library follows a preventive and curative conservation policy through out its laboratories:

Our background of periodic documents is about collections
A very important amount of it is affected with acidity.
DEACIDIFICATION
Deacidification is considered the best way to save collections from deterioration by preventing the degradation of cellulose
and prolong their life by a factor of 3 to 5.

9. PROCESS OF DEACIDIFICATION
The neutralization of already existing acids to stop them
The addition of an alkaline reserve (further protection)

EXAMPLES OF DEACIDIFICATION PROCESS The Bückeburg process (Neschen C900 machine) Equipment that allows mass deacidification in water environment (magnesium bicarbonate) of single sheets with processing capacity of 450 A4 sheets/h Results : pH value increase from 4.19 to 8.52 Alkaline reserve of 1.8 % CaCo3/kg Up to 30 % consolidation of sheets

11. The bookkeeper process
It is manual treatment by spraying using magnesium oxide
It is complementary to mass treatment
In fact it is used for very large and also very friable documents that can not be treated in machine.

12. AIR TREATMENT IN STORAGE SPACES
The deterioration of Cultural Heritage is also caused by insects, fungi, molds and bacteria which are present in the air and produce enormous and irreversible damages to documents
An air treatment system allows preventing damages to the collections in storage spaces

Mobile unit for the destruction of airborne microorganisms
It eliminates the risk of storing viable microorganisms (fungi, bacteria, viruses and spores) by
exposure to high electric fields and oxidizing species in cold plasma chambers,
It also decreases the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air.

14. Example 2 : ABIOS from RGI – Italy
ABIOS® is an air treatment system which draws ambient air, sterilizes it by applying short wavelength UV radiations and returns it to the environment completely inert.
