1 Corinthians 6:12-20 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. [13] “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. [14] And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. [15] Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! [16] Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” [17] But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. [18] Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. [19] Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, [20] for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

It was known as "Wealthy Corinth"
It was known as "Wealthy Corinth". The reason for its wealth was its location. It was able to control the only land access to the Peloponnese and so dominated the trade… to the east and to the west… Because of its wealth, ancient Corinth became a city of luxury. Even in classical times it was known as place of rather loose morals. It was known for its courtesans, who at one stage were thought to number more than a thousand. The priestesses indulged in sacred prostitution at the Temple of Aphrodite. One of the priestesses is mentioned by the Roman historian Pausanias and was still a problem in St Paul's day*. *

“The Corinthians didn’t think they were being immoral. They thought they were so spiritually advanced that mundane earthly standards no longer applied to them. They seemed to believe that their level of spirituality permitted them to do what they wanted with their bodies”

*In some of the cases (e.g., Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) several factors must be borne in mind, which reveal that those situations were not parallel with some of the egregious examples that came later (e.g., Reuben, Amnon). The regulations of the Law of Moses were binding only upon those to whom it was given at the time, and subsequently upon all who lived under that law until its abolition (at the death of Christ — Romans 7:1; Ephesians 2:11; Colossians 2:13-17). Even in our legal system there is recognition of the ex post facto principle, namely that one is not amenable to the consequences of a law passed after the commission of a certain act. The people of the Patriarchal Period, therefore, were not under the specific regulations of the Mosaic Code.
16
They were obligated to universal moral principles, but not to the intricate details of some of the Mosaic regulations which came later. Note this comment from Professor Walter Kaiser. “Prior to Moses’ time, incest in many of the forms later proscribed, were not thought to be wrong. Thus, even Moses’ own father, Amram, married an aunt, his father’s sister, Jochebed (Exodus 6:20)” *God has never approved of indiscriminate sexual activity outside of the marriage relationship in any age of human history.”

SEXUAL IMMORALITY & RELATIONAL MISCONDUCT relational misconduct: infighting When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? … [4] So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? [5] I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, [6] but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? [7] To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. (v.1, 4-7)
