The Relationship Between the Testaments
Hebrews 10:12 “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins” Romans 15:4 “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

A Comparison of the Offerings
The burnt offering: wrath 2 Samuel 24:25 “And David built there an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD responded to the plea for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel.”

A Comparison of the Offerings
The grain offering: tribute Deut 26:10 “‘And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me.’ And you shall set it down before the LORD your God and worship before the LORD your God.” The sin offering: cleansing

The Purpose of the Sin Offering
God dwells with His people Ex 29:43-46 “There I will meet with the people of Israel, and it shall be sanctified by my glory. I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar. Aaron also and his sons I will consecrate to serve me as priests. I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.”

The Purpose of the Sin Offering
God is righteous Psalm 92:15 “to declare that the LORD is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.” Sin pollutes (the person/nation/taber-nacle) and God cannot dwell there Lev 15:31 ““Thus you shall keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, lest they die in their uncleanness by defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.”

The Purpose of the Sin Offering
Blood cleanses Leviticus 16:9 “And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.” Ezekiel 43:20 “And you shall take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the ledge and upon the rim all around. Thus you shall purify the altar and make atonement for it.”

What does “unintentional” mean?
The sin offering covered only sins committed unintentionally. This category included sins done by mistake, in error, through oversight or ignorance, through lack of consideration, or by carelessness. That is, this sacrifice covered sins that sprang from the weakness of the flesh (cf. Num. 15:27–29). It did not cover sins committed with a “high hand,” namely, in haughty, defiant rebellion against God. Tom Constable’s expository notes on the Bible
