Igneous Rocks Igneous comes from the Latin word for “fire”
Igneous rock form when hot, liquid rock, or magma, cools and solidifies Type that forms depends on the composition of the magma and the amount of time it takes to cool
3
Intrusive Igneous Rock
Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earth’s surface Coarse-grained because it cooled slowly, therefore crystals had more time to grow
4
Extrusive Igneous Rock
Rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earth’s surface Cools very quickly so very small crystals or no crystals Magma flows from volcanoes and fissures (cracks in Earth’s crust)
