What minerals do they contain How large are the crystals Intrusive: rock that cools and hardens under the earth's surface Large crystals Extrusive: rock that cools and hardens on the earth's surface Small crystals

Sedimentary Rock Rock that is formed from sediments that are compacted and cemented together Classification 1. Clastic (detrital): made of fragments of previous rock Classified by size and shape of fragments 2. Biochemical or Organic: rock formed from once living material (fossils) 3. Chemical: formed from minerals left behind when water dries up

Classification: according to arrangement of grains that make up rock Foliated: bands, rock has a striped look Nonfoliated: no bands or stripes seen
