2
Significance of Mice Increasing use in research
Transgenic and Breeding capabilities Miniature size Low maintenance cost
3
Problem to be Solved No desirable method of measurement Miniature size
Difficulty with physiological measurements
4
Why pulse oximetry? Measure blood oxygen saturation Measure heart rate
Monitoring during surgery Research on free ranging mice
5
Why NovaMouseTM? Survival of mice Reduction of cost Less expensive
6
Specific Goals To build a pulse oximeter for a mouse: Small size
Ability to be wireless Allows movement Accurate Reaching heart rates up to 800 beats per minute
7
Current Design Nonin Medical, Inc. Pros: Cons: Allows movement
For large animals Inaccurate Not wireless
8
Our Design Reduced hemoglobin vs. oxyhemoglobin
DC and pulsatile components Ratio of ratios
9
Design Specifications
Frequency range: 0.1 Hz to 150 Hz Op Amp: 2.3V to 5.5V supply Rechargeable Battery: 4.8V LED: 1.7V supply Gain: 10 Tail dimensions
10
Circuit Transimpedance Amplifier High Pass Filter
Two Pole Low Pass Filter Low Pass Filter

Problems Encountered/ Solutions
Found new LED’s with common input voltage of 1.7V Used wrist straps carefully Incompatible red and infrared LED voltage ranges Red LED: 1.8V to 4V Infrared LED: 1V to 1.5V Blown out op amps due to static electricity
12
Market Potential and Budget
Universities, hospitals, and other research facilities 50,000 devices in the year 2004 About 1 million mice are potential targets $5-10 million in sales $100 in expenses to date
