Daily Routine Sit in your appropriate seat quietly
Have all necessary materials out All back packs on the floor All cell phones on silent and away in backpacks All IPods off and headphones out of your ears Hats off No food or drink except for water
2
Bell Work Compare and contrast small scale and large scale metamorphism What is foliation?
3
Earth Science Announcements
Mineral Quiz on Wednesday
4
The Rock Cycle
5
Magma a mixture of molten or semi-molten rock, volatiles and solids that is found beneath the surface of the Earth
6
Crystallization the removal and segregation from a melt of different mineral precipitates at different temperatures and different periods of cooling based on chemical composition
7
Igneous Rock rock type that is formed due to the solidification of magma or lava over long and short periods of time respectively
8
Extrusive fine grained igneous rocks that form on the surface that cool rapidly
9
Intrusive coarse grained igneous rock that form below the surface that form at high temperatures over a long period of time
10
Weathering the mechanical and chemical processes that break down rocks into small pieces
11
Sediment naturally occurring material that is broken down by processes of weathering , and is subsequently transported by the action of wind, water, or ice
12
Erosion the transportation of sediments form wind, water, ice, or gravity
13
Deposition process by which, sediments, soil, and rocks settle out and are added to a landform or land mass after being eroded or transported by wind, water, or ice
14
Lithificaiton the consolidation of a loosely deposited sediment into a hard sedimentary rock through compaction (squishing sediments together) and cementation (using a mineral to stick sediments together)
15
Sedimentary Rock rock type that forms from the deposition of eroded sediments, precipitation of minerals out of chemically based solutions, or the high compaction of dead organic matter
16
Metamorphism the process of changing the crystalline structure of minerals in rocks to produce new rock types by using intense pressure and heat
17
Metamorphic Rock rock type that changes one rock to another rock type by rearranging the mineral structures due to regional and contact metamorphism
18
Melting the process which a mineral or rock experiences extreme heat and pressure and changes from a solid to a molten material
19
Uplift vertical elevation increases on the Earth’s Crust in response to natural forces, such as plate tectonics
