4. Who can register to vote?
Citizen of the United States
Age 18 years on or before the next general election day (Nov. 6, 2018)
Legal resident of the county where you plan to vote for 30 days before the election
Not currently incarcerated, on probation, or on parole for a felony conviction

5. How do we register?
Fill out a NC Voter Registration Form (available online, libraries, DMV).
Mail it to the County Board of Elections at least 25 days BEFORE the election.
Elections Board verifies identity.

Registered at your current address?
Have plenty of supplies: registration forms (English & Spanish) clipboards, pens (Blue and Black ink only), signs, stickers, handouts, candy!
Walk the room!
Engage voters!
May I help you update your registration?
Be polite, friendly and kind!
Be non-partisan: LWV is a non-partisan
It is illegal to pre-fill out the party affiliation
Offer to fill out the form for people and let them sign
Go over the forms with the people to make sure it is legible and properly filled out
Turn in all forms: it is illegal to fill in forms once the registrant has left

9. After Registering Voters
Protect Completed Forms
Collect completed forms in a secure place
Mail/ Bring completed forms to County/NC Board of Elections within 7 days of completions

10. After Registering Voters
Inform Registrants
Receive voter registration card from county BOE: polling place and precinct. NOT needed to vote but should be saved.
Check registration status with county BOE by phone or online:
BOE may call if the BOE can’t verify identity based on info on the voter registration form.
This is why Section 3 of the form is so important

11. Step 1: Submit Absentee Ballot Request
Obtain from B. of Elections or
Include full name, residential address, ID number, signature
No ID: include document (utility bills, bank statement, pay stub) with name and current address
Mail, fax, , or hand deliver to County B. of Elections
Check status at
Near relative or legal guardian may sign and submit request
Last day for BOE to receive ballot request: 7 days before election

12. Step 2: Receive Ballot Step 3: Return the Ballot
County Board of Elections will mail ballot and return envelope
Mark your ballot secretly in presence of two witnesses or one notary
Only a family member, guardian or Board of Elections Team can help mark ballot
Put ballot inside return envelope and have witnesses sign on back
Complete all requested information on envelope
Mail/carry envelope to County BOE or to Early voting site
Confirm that ballot was received or call County BOE
Last day to deliver or postmark absentee ballot: Election Day

13. Additional Facts
No ID info on Voter Registration application: Can still register but will be asked to show a photo ID or an official document with name and current address when you first go to vote.
Same Day Registration: complete a Voter Registration Application, show proof of ID and address: NCDL, Uni/college student ID with school document showing your address, Gov. issued ID and utility bill, bank or Gov. document with name and address
PROVISIONAL BALLOT: Any voter may request to cast a provisional ballot regardless of the situation.
For example: Your name is not on the rolls and you believe you have registered
You are at the wrong precinct on election day
Help with marking ballot: Any voter requiring help with marking or other assistance with voting must ASK for it.

14. How to Vote: General Election
Absentee Ballot
Sept. 7, Friday: Absentee Ballots by mail will be available.
Oct. 30, Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.: Last day to request Absentee Ballots by mail.
Nov. 6, Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.: Absentee Ballot return deadline.
Early / One-stop Voting
Oct. 18, Thursday: Early Voting begins. Same day Registration is allowed.
Nov. 3, Saturday, 1:00 p.m.: Early Voting and One-stop voting ends.
For durham county primary elections: 9/ registration closed for primary: 9/24 early voting begins
Election Day
Oct. 12, Friday: Voter Registration Closes.
Nov. 6, Tuesday: Election Day: Polls open 6:30am-7:30pm
