Applications of Right Triangles
LG: I can apply my knowledge of right triangles to solve problems based on realistic situations
2
Terms to know: “Angle of elevation” – angle measured from the horizontal up to an object “Angle of depression” – angle measured from an object down to the ground The terms “angle of elevation” and “angle of depression” are used frequently in application problems
3
Application Example 1 A statue casts a shadow 67m long. If the sun’s rays form an angle of 63° with the ground, determine the height of the statue to one decimal place.
4
Application Example 2 A 7 ft ladder is leaning against a wall. If safety regulations require the ladder to be 2 ft from the wall, what angle does the ladder make with the ground? For all application problems, draw the triangle being described, label the sides as opposite, adjacent, or hypotenuse, then choose the correct ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to solve
5
Application Example 3 A small plane is flying at an altitude of 3500m toward an island. The angle of depression to the island is 18°. How much farther, to the nearest kilometer, does the plane need to fly before it is directly above the island? tan
