5 Trends in Business Intelligence
Course 10778A Trends in Business Intelligence Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Self-service reporting and analysis You can use the trends section of the topic to ask students about their own observations and experiences of recent trends in business intelligence (BI). Increasing adoption of BI by a wider range of organizations Availability of out-of-the- box solutions

6 Business Intelligence Project Roles
Course 10778A Business Intelligence Project Roles Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Business advisors Project manager BI architect BI developers Report authors Information workers Testers BI administrator Note that the role names may differ from organization to organization, but the tasks that each of these roles perform are essential to a successful BI project. Note also that there is not necessarily a one-to-one correspondence between roles and individuals. All of the following role assignments are possible: A single individual performs each role. A single individual performs multiple roles. Multiple individuals share a single role.

7 Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling
Course 10778A Data Models Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Semantic models Present data to users as meaningful information Add context and structure to data Data modeling Requires knowledge of business and technical aspects of the solution Is an iterative process Helps to ensure that solutions meet the stated requirements Invite students to contribute their own experiences of iterative project design, and encourage discussion of its merits and shortcomings.

10 BI Semantic Models in SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services
Course 10778A BI Semantic Models in SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling A single logical model A choice of data models to suit different BI requirements Power View Excel PowerPivot Third-Party Applications SharePoint Insights Emphasize that no matter how you build your model, whether a tabular data model in Microsoft® PowerPivot for Excel, or a multidimensional or tabular model in SQL Server Data Tools, you are creating a BI semantic model. 11 Installation Requirements for Common Scenarios
Course 10778A Installation Requirements for Common Scenarios Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Desktop BI Data analysis in PowerPivot for Excel workbooks Departmental BI Departmental reporting Analysis of data in Analysis Services databases Enterprise BI SharePoint integration Power View reporting Collaboration These three scenarios are just examples, and they should not be viewed as recommended configurations. Ask students for their own experiences of using BI software to meet different requirements.

12 Considerations for SharePoint Configuration
Course 10778A Considerations for SharePoint Configuration Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Reporting Services in SharePoint Integrated mode Select Reporting Services – SharePoint and Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint installation options Install Reporting Services SharePoint service Create a Reporting Services service application Analysis Services in SharePoint Integrated mode Select the SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint setup role Configure the server by using the PowerPivot Configuration Tool

13 Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling
Course 10778A Lab Scenario Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Students will perform the lab in the role of a business user in the Adventure Works Cycles company, and use SQL Server 2012 BI features to: Publish a sales report from Report Builder to a SharePoint library, and then view the report View an Excel workbook that contains a PowerPivot data model, and publish it to SharePoint Server Create an interactive data visualization in SharePoint by using Power View Point out that the instructions in the lab are deliberately designed to be high-level so that students need to think carefully about what they are trying to accomplish and work out how best to proceed for themselves. Encourage students to read the scenario information carefully and collaborate with each other to meet the scenario requirements. Remind students that if they find a particular task or exercise too challenging, they can find step-by-step instructions in the lab answer key. This lab is an overview lab, designed to show the BI capabilities you will explore in greater depth in the rest of this course Business users and executives at Adventure Works Cycles need to be able to view reports that show sales figures, and perform interactive analysis of sales data in Excel and SharePoint Server

14 Lab 1: Reporting and Analyzing Data
Course 10778A Lab 1: Reporting and Analyzing Data Module 1: Introduction to Business Intelligence and Data Modeling Exercise 1: Exploring a Reporting Services Report Exercise 2: Exploring a PowerPivot Workbook Exercise 3: Exploring a Power View Report In this lab, students will explore a Microsoft SQL Server® Reporting Services report and a PowerPivot for Excel workbook. They will also create a simple report in Power View, a feature of SQL Server Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise Edition. Exercise 1 In this exercise, students will open an existing Reporting Services report and explore the data that it contains. Exercise 2 In this exercise, students will open an existing PowerPivot for Excel workbook and explore the data that it contains. Exercise 3 In this exercise, students will create a simple Power View report. Logon information Virtual machine MIA-SQLBI User name ADVENTURWORKS\Student Password Pa$$w0rd Estimated time: 30 minutes
