Bell Ringer True/False- In a physical change, a new substance is formed. Name some physical properties of this room. What is an example of a chemical property? What is due this Friday? If you lose your notebook, what should you do IMMEDIATELY?

Chapter 2 Section 3 Changes of Matter
3
2 Types of Changes in Matter:
Physical Change- any change that alters the form or appearance of matter but does form a new substance Ex: sand sand castle Changes of state- solid, liquid, gas Change in shape or form- bending, crushing, dissolving, breaking, chopping Methods of separating mixtures – filtration and distillation
4
Chemical Change (Chemical Reaction)- a change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Hydrogen peroxide on a cut Ex: combustion, electrolysis, oxidation, tarnishing
5
Law of Conservation of Mass
Law of Conservation of Mass – matter is not created or destroyed in any physical or chemical change
7
What is Energy? Every chemical or physical change in matter includes a change in energy. Ex: Bending a paper clip- requires energy Ice water absorbs energy from surroundings Candle wax burns- gives off energy
8
Temperature- a measure of the average energy of random motion of particles of matter
Thermal energy- the total energy of all the particles in an object
9
Endothermic change- a change in which energy is absorbed, or taken in
Melting of ice Baking a cake Exothermic change- a change in which energy is released, or given off. A fire burning Exothermic reaction Potassium Permanganate
