Maurice has been a star researcher. He thinks he is ready to become a Team Leader. He does all the right things with regard to data collection, analysis, and report writing. He is witty, quick, and extroverted. If there's an opportunity to make the group around him laugh, he’ll grab it and run with it. There have been a few times when the jokes got raucous laughter but at someone’s expense. Sometimes he wonders what kind of image his current peers, and potential future subordinates, have of him and what they would think if he got the job. He knows the chief enjoys his sense of humor and has never made a negative comment about it.

Humor can be useful in business meetings where it can diffuse tension and provide perspective and clarity. It can also be disruptive, weaken a message, and undercut another’s legitimate concerns or in the worst case their self- esteem.
Maurice needs to assess the impact of his style to see if his quips are constructive or destructive. If he has any doubt, it is best to save his witticisms for social occasions without co-workers present.

Monitor your behavior. People are watching. How do you appear, from their perspective? The less time people see you, the less information they have about you, and the more they rely on the limited amount of experience they have with you. Use your time to project your best attributes.
