Influences In 1841, Kierkegaard left traveled to Berlin to attend a series of lectures by Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schellin. Kierkegaard was interested in Schelling’s evolution as a thinker. Listening to Schelling’s lectures, Kierkegaard began to develop his own ideas, which would later contribute to existentialism. J.L. Heiberg was the doyen of Copenhagen’s literati. Heiberg, more than any other person, was responsible for introducing Hegelianism into Denmark. Kierkegaard spent a good deal of energy trying to break into the Heiberg literary circle, but desisted once he had found his own voice in The Concept of Irony. George W F Hegel also played a big part in the works of Kierkegaard. Hegel was considered to have found the key to explaining, in principle, just about everything. Kierkegaard, however did not agree with his ideas and published works that went against his beliefs.

Spiritual History and Point-Of-View Cont.
Believes we can either have faith or we can take offense, but we cannot believe by virtue reason We have to suspend that reason to believe in something higher than reason We must believe by virtue of the absurd Ex. fear and trembling or repetition The condition for realizing truth for the Christian is a gift from god which must be repeatedly performed by the individual barrier

Kierkegaard’s Aesthetic POV
Believed that your existence comes before yourself. Your individual self was the most important part of life. Every decision no matter how small changes your entire life. Human freedom leads to despair. Humans pass through three stages Aesthetic To live life to the fullest you must have as many pleasures as possible. Ethical You must base focus on your ethics because aesthetics only distract from boredom for a short period of time. Religious No one leads a completely religious life. So to be truly religious, you must surround yourself by those who are not religious.

Kierkegaard’s Ethical POV
Everyone has an ethical responsibility in life they must follow. However, a person either leads an ethical way of life or a religious way of life. He was deadly afraid that his son might one day become a part of social norms that surrounded him. Everyone must live their own individual lives and make their own in decisions.
