3 What’s in it for the student? Advanced Courses and Your Future
Students benefit in three ways: Students learn to do college level coursework while still in high school, making the college transition easier. They become more attractive candidates to colleges in the admissions process They may get credit or advanced standing by scoring well on AP or IB exams I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing. The second, from the dean of Admissions at Oberlin College, who came to visit the B-CC counseling staff and administration a few weeks ago. The dean commented that IB diploma candidates are pursuing the most rigorous course available in an American high school, and that their application package is considered accordingly, The third anecdote comes from a class of 2006 grad who is currently at Rice University in Texas, who was awarded almost a full year of credits based on his IB exams. If you’re interested in seeing where IB students have continued their education over the last several years, there’s a purple sheet in your handout package with more information. There is also a pink page with the results of some studies on the performance of IB students in college.

5 Some quick background about International Baccalaureate Diploma
Founded in the late 1960’s as an internationally recognized high school diploma credential for students living abroad who wanted to return to their own country for university. Currently recognized as a highly rigorous secondary school diploma – most IB students stay in their own countries for college. I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. 11 More information about IB

12 The decision process Because the decision about advanced courses is made by the student (with support from families), the next two months should be an information gathering process for the student. As an example, many IB students will be prepared for AP Calculus AB or BC along the way; for foreign language or literature exams, for AP Environmental Science, or for the English language and composition examination. It’s a good idea to check with the admissions websites of specific colleges to see if it’s worthwhile to take the additional exams. click

15 FAQ’s about MYP and the diploma program
Can I register for the diploma program or courses if I don’t complete my Personal Project? A. The Personal Project is very valuable in the diploma program, as it gives a student the opportunity to learn something in depth and complete a project over time – but if you don’t complete the project you can still be a diploma program student or take individual courses. IB – International Baccalaureate – is a product of the 1960’s, founded in Geneva in IB was initially founded in order to allow students who were in secondary school outside of their home country to be able to return home to university with a diploma which would be recognized in the same way as a national diploma. 16 FAQ’s about registering for IB courses
Are there prerequisites for courses? Do I need a teacher recommendation? A. There are some course prerequisites for both AP and IB courses (Math, Foreign Language) Students at B-CC make up their own minds regarding participation in advanced courses. Because the choice is student-driven, it’s important to gather as much information as possible. 17 Q. When do IB exams happen? What are they like? Are they mandatory?
FAQ’s about IB exams: Q. When do IB exams happen? What are they like? Are they mandatory? A. IB exams – which are mandatory - happen at the end of the course sequence (which can be two years long). IB exams have multiple choice sections in science only, short answer sections in some subjects, and choices of essay questions. As an example, many IB students will be prepared for AP Calculus AB or BC along the way; for foreign language or literature exams, for AP Environmental Science, or for the English language and composition examination. It’s a good idea to check with the admissions websites of specific colleges to see if it’s worthwhile to take the additional exams. click

18 FAQ’s about colleges and the IB
Do students who do well on IB exams get college credit? A. Every college has its own policy about credit, but generally, students do get credit for good scores on all higher level exams and some standard level exams I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing. 19 FAQ’s about colleges and ib?
I’ve heard that IB is great for students attending college outside of the US but for students staying in the US it’s not as good – is this true? US colleges recognize the rigorous work that IB diploma candidates do and admit them to their colleges at a higher rate than non-diploma candidates. I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing. 22 FAQ’s about IB and colleges
How do IB diploma candidates find out what colleges offer to them in terms of special programs, credits, and admissions? A. There’s a regional IB college fair for current IB 11th graders and 10th students signed up for the diploma program that will take place on April 20th . About 150 colleges from the US and abroad will be there to recruit diploma candidates. I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing. 23 FAQ’s about IB I’ve heard that IB is great for students interested in humanities, languages, and social science, but not strong for science and math. Is that true? A. Not exactly for math – IB Math HL has BC Calculus as a pre-requisite. For science there are some differences between AP and IB sciences – but the biggest difference is that an IB diploma candidate probably won’t take more than two science courses in 11th and 12th grades. I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing. 24 What happens next – IB diploma/certificate?
Students interested in learning more about IB and meeting with Ms. Groeneman, turn in the information sheet with contact information Students wishing to take some IB courses or the IB diploma, must meet with Ms. Groeneman to design an IB program and have her sign off on the registration card before turning it in I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing. 25 What happens next - AP? Students planning to register for Advanced Placement courses just need to indicate their AP course selections on registration cards for next year. I’ll use three anecdotes here. The first one comes from the College of William and Mary, where IB diploma candidates are given a “bye” through the first round of the application process. In other words, their applications are automatically passed into the second round just by virtue of their diploma candidate standing.
