Espionage & Sedition Acts Created to keep people from speaking out against the War Eugene Debs, the leader of the American Socialist Party, is put in prison under this act. What did the socialist party believe in? Why do you think they are targeted and punished during WWI?

19 Schenck v. United States, 1919
Charles Schenck published pamphlets (writings) protesting the draft. Schenck was arrested under the Espionage Act. He appealed to Supreme Court because the 1st amendment gives the right of free speech! Supreme court ruled in times of war, the government may limit free speech

28 In your groups Part 1: Evaluating Propaganda Posters
Examine all four propaganda posters Complete the Propaganda Chart for each poster. Make sure you know whether you are looking at poster A, poster B, etc.

29 In your groups Part 2: Creating Propaganda Posters
Your group will select one objective (goal) and one technique/tactic. Create a propaganda poster that uses the technique you have selected and also has the objective you selected. Posters should have a visual and some type of slogan or phrase.

30 Evaluating another group’s poster
On the back of the group’s poster- please guess– you can only guess ONE so guess whatever is most readily apparent 1) What their objective was (recruiting soldiers, unifying the country, making $$, conserving resources) 2) What technique they used (demonization, emotional appeal, name calling, patriotic appeals, catchy slogans, visual symbols, humor)
