1 DO NOW What is binomial nomenclature?
Date: 1/9 & 1/10 Reminders: Quiz on Classification/Dichotomous Keys/Adaptations this Friday What is binomial nomenclature? What does the first word represent? What does the second word represent?

2 -Review the terms internal and external structures.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How can internal and external structures help an organism to survive? OBJECTIVES: -Review the terms internal and external structures. -Brainstorm structures that help organisms adapt to their enviornment

9 Adaptations Glossary pg 105
Word Definition Picture Adaptations A trait or characteristic that helps an organism survive. Internal Structures Traits or characteristics that are inside an organism. External Structures Traits or characteristics that are on the outside of an organism.

10 Glossary: Robber Fly Hawk Moth Caterpillar Word Definition Picture
Mimicry An adaptation, where an organism resembles (looks like) another Robber Fly Hawk Moth Caterpillar

11 Glossary: Word Definition Picture Camouflage
An adaptation that allows an organism to blend into its environment

12 Adaptations and Survival
What Bees See

13 Adaptations and Survival
Picture of the Adaptation Organism Describe the organism’s Environment Describe the Adaptation (structure/behavior) Is this structure INTERNAL or EXTERNAL? How does this adaptation enhance survival of the organism?  FLOWER Flowers grow in fields and areas that are open . There is usually good rainfall in these areas. Bright Coloration (Structural) -Flowers have bright coloration that attracts bees. This is an external feature. The coloration of flowers attracts bees and sends signals to bees that there is pollen present. The bees are attracted to the flower and collect the pollen. When they land on other plants they pollinate those plants allowing the plant to reproduce.

14 DO NOW Name one internal structure that helps you to survive.
Date: 1/11 & 1/12 Name one internal structure that helps you to survive. What organ system is it part of?

15 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: OBJECTIVES:
What traits or characteristics provide an adaptive advantage for survival in some animals? OBJECTIVES: -Explore internal and external structures and how they provide an adaptive advantage for some animals.

16 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: OBJECTIVES:
How can traits change in a population over time? OBJECTIVES: -Explore how traits (or genes) are passed down from generation to generation and how that impacts the survival of a species.

17 Peppered Moth Read the selection at your table to yourself
Turn to your shoulder partner and discuss what you think happened. Be prepared to share.

18 Changes over time: Adaptation: an inheritable structure or behavior that helps an organism to better survive and/or reproduce. inheritable DNA/GENES Dendroica coronata coronata

19 Investigation: Camouflage
Setup your Composition Book exactly as shown Investigation: Camouflage Data Generation Color 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Red Org. Yel. Grn. EXPLAIN YOUR PROCEDURE: Pg 108 Pg 109

20 GOLD FISH DO NOT EAT GOLDFISH (They are over a year old.)
DO NOT CRUSH GOLDFISH

21 Investigation: Procedures
Start Hunt Reproduce Population Gen 0 Red 3 Org Yel Grn Population Gen. 0 Gen. 1 Red 3 Org Yel Grn 2 6 4 4

22 Investigation: Procedures
Place 3 goldfish of each color on the plate; yellow side up Stand with your backs facing the plate Turn quickly and pick up 4 goldfish; place it in your bag For each goldfish on the plate, add one more of the same color Record your population data Repeat steps, but take two more goldfish each time until you have data for generation 4. Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Trial 4 Take 4 Take 6 Take 8 Take 10

23 Investigation: Procedures
Gently slide all the goldfish off the plate onto the tray Change paper to green. Place your goldfish population back onto the paper. Environmental Change

24 Investigation: Procedures
Stand with your backs facing the tray Turn quickly and pick up twelve goldfish; place them in your bag For each goldfish on the plate, add one more of the same color Record your population data Repeat steps, taking two extra each time until you have data for generations 5 to 8 . Trial 5 Trial 6 Trial 7 Trial 8 Take 12 Take 14 Take 16 Take 18

25 Investigation: Graphing

26 Investigation: Graphing

27 Investigation: Conclusion
Answer with complete sentences on pg 8 of composition book. The population of goldfish showed variation for which trait? Summarize what happened during the investigation: How did population change over time? Did a certain color(s) become more common? Why? How did changing the environment affect the population? Pg

28 Natural Selection Natural Selection

29 Glossary: Natural Selection- A process in nature that occurs if an organism is better adapted to survive than another.

30 DO NOW Date: 1/13 Describe Natural Selection in your own words.

31 -Take a quiz on adaptation and natural selection.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How can traits change in a population over time? OBJECTIVES: -Take a quiz on adaptation and natural selection.

32 QUIZ Voice Level Zero

33 Invent an Animal 1. You and your partner will be given a specific Biome 2. Your teams will invent an animal (a fictional one) that is able to survive in their habitat.  This includes ways they find food, water, shelter, protect themselves etc… 3. Draw and create your animal. Label any internal and external structures that allow the animal to survive in its habitat.  4. Name the animal and be prepared to present the animal to the class. Make sure to discuss their adaptations
