1 Write this on your colorful Unit 1 Homework Calendar
Tuesday 9/5/17 Week #1 What now…(write on bellringer sheet in a complete sentence) What is one thing you observed on the way to school? So what… How did making this observation help you? Or how would this observation be harmful if missed? Homework: Bring in a picture of yourself that I can keep Bring in supplies Binder 3 dividers Red pen for corrections Write this on your colorful Unit 1 Homework Calendar

2 What did we do? Why does it matter? What are we going to do?
Past OBJECTIVE: N/A What are we going to do? TODAY’S OBJECTIVE: I can initiate the scientific method by making observations. Why does it matter? FUTURE OBJECTIVE: Why do you think it is important to make observations?

3 Agenda Bellringer & Share-Out Plant Observations Summary
Classroom Policies

4 Using the plant pictures provided
Complete the observation table at the top of the sheet titled “Ailanthus Observations, Inferences, and Questions”. Observations – 6 min Share out – 3 min

5 Summary Tuesday 9/5/17 Week #1
1. Think about where you live, how many different plants have you observed around your home and how did you know they were different plants?

6 Classroom policies You must be on time if you are going to be late get a tardy before entering the room NO CELL PHONES…If seen out I will take them until the end of the day You cannot go to the bathroom the first ten minutes of class or the last ten minutes of class…You may go when independent work is being done only. Do not interrupt me from explaining a lesson to ask if you have to go All papers for this class can be found on the weebly website Remind app Code: text to 81010 All papers are collected on Friday, not every hand out will count for a grade. Every Friday you will turn in your Bellringer sheet, Weekly reading, and class assignment of my choosing from the week.

7 Classroom Policies Continued
Only extra credit is through receiving stamps on your bellringer sheet how to get stamps… The whole Class is silently working the first 5 min of class The whole Class worked well with no student disruptions in 50 min period Student goes above and beyond in helping other people in the classroom Students finished a worksheet that will not be collected for a grade No cheating policy please do not copy other students answers/responses for Biology work or you both will receive a zero Do your own work Do not write/draw on these tables even with a pencil or eraser it is an instant write up for destroying school property and you must come in and clean ALL the tables

8 Classroom policies Continued
Most assignments are worth 16 points 4 points for receiving a stamp on it for doing it on time 4 points for making corrections in different color pen and you must put check mark, a smiley face  ,star next to your response even if it is correct if it wrong you will mark it wrong and write in the correct answer 4 points for turning it in on Friday when collected 4 points for following directions

1. Ailanthus Observations Inferences and Questions Reference Section should have: Prefix Suffix Sheet Biology annotation strategies How to make a graph TALKS Graph My Grade Lab Report Rubric Weekly Readings Week 1 Cheating Ourselves of Sleep

10 Wednesday 9/6/17 Week #1 What now…(Write in a complete sentence on your bellringer sheet) Look around the room write down 6 observations about this room 3 of them must to have a number in your description. So what……(Write in a complete sentence on your bellringer sheet) Pick one observation and write down how this observation will help you be successful in this classroom? Homework: Bring in binder, 3 dividers, and utensils TOMORROW. Have parents read and sign Biology room information sheet Bring a picture I can Have

11 What did we do? Why does it matter? What are we going to do?
Past OBJECTIVE: What did we do yesterday? Be specific!! I can distinguish between, and make, quantitative and qualitative observations. What are we going to do? TODAY’S OBJECTIVE: Why does it matter? FUTURE OBJECTIVE: Recording both numerical and descriptive information can be helpful in determining the success of a diet plan. Can you think of another situation in which both types of observations would be useful?

12 Agenda Bellringer & Share-Out
Quantitative vs. Qualitative Observations Leaf Rubbing Objective Summary Classroom Policies Summary

13 Summary 9/6/17 Week #1 Make 2 quantitative and 2 qualitative observations about yourself. Make sure you write in complete sentences!!

14 Thursday 9/7/17 Week #1 Do now……(Write in a complete sentence on your bellringer sheet) FIRST: Read the statement below and identify whether it is a qualitative or quantitative observation. “Student X came to class 2 minutes late and was sweaty.” So what……(Write in a complete sentence on your bellringer sheet) SECOND: write what you can assume based on this observation. Homework: Bring in a picture I can Have Make sure you have binder for Bio

15 What did we do? Why does it matter? What are we going to do?
Past OBJECTIVE: Identify whether the following statements are quantitative or qualitative: A) There are less than 500 freshmen taking biology. B) All of the biology teachers are women. I can make inferences about a plant based on observations. I can develop questions based on inferences that I make about a plant. What are we going to do? TODAY’S OBJECTIVE: Why does it matter? FUTURE OBJECTIVE: Assumptions based on observations are not always accurate, but why might it still be beneficial to make them?

16 Agenda Bellringer & Share-Out Ailanthus Inferences & Questions Summary
Set up Binder/Class room Policies

17 Summary 9/7/17 Week #1 Formative assessments, such as classwork, quizzes, and homework, make up 60% of your grade. Based on this observation, what inference can you make? What question can you ask based on your inference?

18 Friday 9/8/17 Week #1 Ms. Kipp was absent
Do Now.. ……(Write in a complete sentence on your bellringer sheet) Look at the picture below make 3 observations (what do you see) and 3 inferences (what you think based of prior knowledge) about this picture So what………(Write in a complete sentence on your bellringer sheet) Even though this hurricane happened in a different state what inferences can you make on how this can affect you here in Chicago? Think about resources Homework: Make sure you have a binder and have turned in picture of yourself for me to keep

19 What did we do? Why does it matter? What are we going to do?
Past OBJECTIVE: What is the major difference between an observation and an inference? I can annotate a scientific text. I can identify the main ideas and supporting details by annotating and summarizing. What are we going to do? TODAY’S OBJECTIVE: Why does it matter? FUTURE OBJECTIVE: What is a benefit of annotating a long, scientific text?

20 Agenda Bellringer & Share-Out
Go over weekly reading (review annotation strategy) Summary Turn In
