Aim: Reproduction in Flowering Plants
Enter Date Aim: Reproduction in Flowering Plants Warm-up: HW:
2
Identify the following parts
1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Petals Stigma Anther Style Ovary Filament
3
How does a plant reproduce?
Flower may contain both male and female reproductive parts However, some flowers only male and others are only female
4
Stamen Anther – makes and holds pollen Filament – holds the anther
5
Pistil Ovary – makes and stores eggs
Style – tube that brings eggs out of the ovary Stigma – keeps the opening to the ovary closed
7
Sticky part that collect pollen grains
What is pollination? Transfer of pollen grains from the ANTHER to the STIGMA Stigma Sticky part that collect pollen grains
8
2 types of Pollination Self-pollination Cross-pollination
transfer of pollen from anther to stigma of same flower Cross-pollination transfer of pollen from one plant to another
9
How does Fertilization Occur?
Pollen grain lands on STIGMA & forms a POLLEN TUBE Results in a ZYGOTE
10
Why is pollination necessary?
Like humans, plants require POLLEN to meet with the EGG in order to form a new offspring
11
How is pollination accomplished?
Petals visual attractant Nectar acts as a chemical attractant Insects Animals Wind
12
The mixing of both pollen and ovary results in a ????
SEED
13
Fruit When pollen is able to fertilize an egg, the developing seed becomes a fruit. The fruit contains many seeds that will spread if the fruit goes uneaten.
14
Germination When fruit fall to the ground and release seeds, these seeds can burrow into soil and form a small plant This is known as germination The seed becomes a seedling and requires water and sunlight.
15
Gymnosperms Seed plants that do not form flowers
16
Angiosperms These are flowering plants
