6 Who will/should educate?
Local employee – national of country where sanctuary located Person familiar with local culture, needs & priorities Staff member who is trained or has experience in education and communication programs In smaller sanctuaries, this role might be combined with other functions and be carried out by personnel such as the director or a senior animal caregiver

7 What materials will be used?
Based on resources available at individual sanctuaries Structured programs - visiting public & classrooms Static displays Graphics Media – videos, primate sounds & more Curriculum for Students Community Outreach Programs .

8 Developing An Education Program
Consult & Collaborate with the local community Consider audiences & potential diverse age groups and learning styles

9 Written Education Policy
Should identify specific components of the program Set out the overall methods by which these components are accomplished

10 PASA Sanctuaries conduct education and communication programs which:
Promote primate conservation Influence people’s long-term attitudes and behaviors thereby encouraging the protection of species and their habitats Are designed to create ongoing public support, influence policy makers, and foster commitment to protecting primates and their habitats Describe specific ways that the audience can contribute to the conservation of species

11 Education Program Evaluation
Keep records of: Specific projects, numbers of participants, and evaluation procedures Evaluate effectiveness & content – update as needed based on feedback

12 Target Audiences Sanctuaries should have a thorough understanding of the needs of their various target audiences. A sanctuary may not be able to reach all audiences equally, but should use a thoughtful approach to audience selection as well as strategic program development.

13 Components of a PASA Education Program
Conservation issues such as habitat management, pet and bushmeat trade Species-specific information such as natural history, social structures, and unique attributes of species housed The role of sanctuaries as centers for conservation, and information on the specific sanctuary and about PASA
