Boundary & Territorial Disputes
Syria/Israel: Fought wars against each other 3 times over territorial disputes. Western Sahara/Morocco: Since 1975, fighting over natural resources located in the Western Sahara (mines, fishing, oil resources).

Boundary & Territorial Disputes
China/Taiwan: Fighting since Taiwan wished to gain its independence in 1949 from China. India/Pakistan: Fought numerous conflicts over the land known as Kashmir.

Cultural Differences (Language, Religion)
Indonesia: Home of several ethnic groups and languages. Canada: Quebec is French speaking, while rest of Canada is English Speaking. Sudan: Site of 20 year civil war between Islamic government and People’s Liberation army.

Balkans: (Southeast Europe) between Serbs, Croats and Muslims. Cyprus: between Greek majority and Turkish minority. Kashmir: between Pakistani Muslims and Indian Hindus.

Nationalism Nationalism: Strong feelings of national identity and the desire for independence (Example: the Kurds of the Middle East).

Humanitarian Initiatives
Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement: Humanitarian organization that offers disaster relief, health training, alleviates human suffering, and offers life saving blood.

Economic Alliances Law of the Sea: United Nations treaty in which resources of the oceans and seas are regulated. China and the U.S.: trade Multinational Corporations: Companies with multiple offices located internationally.

Military Alliances NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization): Political organization of 26 countries from North America and Europe that supports democracy and security for the members.

Problem-Solving Alliances
Antarctic Treaty: A treaty created in 1959 by 12 countries; demilitarized Antarctica and established the continent as a haven for scientific study. United Nations: (Peacekeepers) works to create peace in countries experiencing conflict. 11/15/2018

Peace Corp: organization created in 1961 that strives to help developing countries and that is devoted to peace.

Located in every city, state, country and continent (Ex. Nansemond River Preservation Alliance – NRPA).

Programs to help less fortunate countries.

Cultural Alliances Francophone World: French speaking nations of the world. Commonwealth of Nations: 53 nations including the United Kingdom and some former British colonies which maintain allegiance to the British.
