2 Definitions: demography
The study of the characteristics of human populations, such as size, growth, density, distribution, and vital statistics.

3 Definitions: Sedentary
When a person or group stays and lives in one place.

4 Definitions: Nomadic When a person or group does not stay in one place to live. They move around.

5 Definitions: Migration
Moving from one place to another. Immigration and Emigration are types of migration.

6 Definitions: dwelling
Where a person lives: house, igloo, apartment etc.

The Land Bridge Theory 1. First occupants arrived at the end of the last ice age years ago 2. Hunters followed animals from Asia to the Americas on a land bridge (Bering Strait) created by the ice age

A) Everything about the lives of the Amerindian groups is related to their geographical location and environment.

10 Algonquin (Maliseet, Abenaki)
Location: The Canadian Shield The terrain of the Canadian Shield is very rocky, and the land is not good for farming.

11 Economy: based on hunting and fishing
-Because the land the Algonquin lived on was not good for farming, their main source of food came from the animals they hunted. - As a result, the Algonquin needed to follow the animals in order to survive.

12 Lifestyle: Nomadic Dwelling: Wigwam
1. Because they needed to follow the animals in order to get their food, the Algonquin were constantly moving. Dwelling: Wigwam 1. The Algonquin were nomadic, they did not need to invest a lot of time into building their houses. They needed to construct something that was easy to put together and take apart.

Location: St-Lawrence Lowlands The land in this area is excellent for farming. Economy: Based on farming.

- Because the Iroquois could farm, they didn’t rely as much on hunting. So they did not need to follow the animals. - As a result, they remained sedentary. Dwelling: Longhouse Because the Iroquois would stay in one location for long periods of time, they could put more effort into building their homes.

1. The climate is very harsh and cold. 2. It is above the tree line.

1. The land and climate made it necessary for the Inuit to move.
