Learning Goal: Students will be able to identify those individuals and groups that began to rebel against British policies, draw conclusions about tensions between the colonists and the British that led up to the Boston Massacre, analyze the role of propaganda in the colonies, and identify the Founders and recognize their contributions.

2. Trouble in Boston
1768- John Hancock charged with trying to smuggle goods on his ship in Boston harbor named Liberty
Hancock’s ship was taken
People of Boston filled the streets in protest to Parliament and King George
This event was known as the Liberty Affair which was an event that united the colonists

3. Tensions grow
Colonists, especially in Boston, felt the British were pushing too far with all the laws
Now there were soldiers stationed in Boston to control the people
Soldiers were rude and violent towards the people
People hated the soldiers more and more every day

Negative feelings toward British soldiers grew very quickly
Colonists began to yell insults at soldiers everywhere

10. The Word Spreads
Colonial leaders used the news of killings as propaganda against British
Propaganda- information used to influence an opinion

Colonists create a stronger boycott of British goods

Adams revives the Boston committee of correspondence
This committee circulated writings about the problems the colonists had with the British
More committees were created and made the bond of protesters stronger

13. A crisis over tea
Colonists believed laws to be a “conspiracy against liberty”
British East India Company was running out of money
Tea Act of 1773 was passed to save the company
Company could ship tea without paying the taxes usually placed on tea
Company could sell tea directly to shopkeepers at a low price, bypassing colonists who would buy/sell tea at the normal price
British tea was cheaper and this was a big advantage for the British

14. The Boston Tea Party Any tea other than British tea was illegal
Many colonists refused to buy British tea

15. The Boston Tea Party December 16,1773- colonists acted Ships had tea
Colonists dressed as indians boarded British ships in the Boston Harbor
Ships had tea
Colonists threw all the tea overboard

17. Coercive Acts & Quebec Act =Intolerable Acts
Passed in Spring 1774
Laws to punish colonists in Massachusetts for their resistance to the British
Boston Harbor closed until colonists paid for ruined tea
Prevented food from reaching the colonies
that was usually shipped to colonies
Banned town meetings
Other colonies sent supplies to show support for Bostonians

18. Coercive acts & Quebec Act =Intolerable Acts
Set up permanent government for Quebec, run by British
Granted religious freedom to French Catholics
Colonists did not like that the French had the area west of the Appalachians and north of the Ohio River
Ignored claims colonists had in the area
Coercive Acts + Quebec Act = Intolerable Acts
