These are both self portraits of Picasso. This self-portrait on the right was painted in 1901 when Picasso was only 20 years old. How do you imagine he's feeling? If you said sad you're right. Actually his best friend has died and Picasso was terribly sad. Because he used mostly blue and painted sad subjects this time in PICASSO'S is known as his Blue Period. It was a very sad time for Picasso.

CUBISM. The Three Musicians
Picasso helped create a new style of painting called CUBISM. This style became known as Cubism- an innovative art movement. In Cubism artists began to look at subjects in new ways. They would break up the subject into many different shapes and repaint it from different angles. Cubism started in 1908 and lasted through the 1920's. This painting is called “The Three Musicians”. It's like his picture has broken and been put back together with some new parts. Picasso challenges us to find the musicians. Can you find the 3 musicians? What instruments? Can you find the Harlequin? Picasso said "I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them." The Three Musicians

Guernica (1937) Picasso created this painting as a reaction to the civil war in his home country of Spain. It is one of his most famous. Guernica is a small town in Spain which was bombed, killing many innocent people. Picasso was very angry and used this painting to show the world how painful war is. The painting is entirely black, white , and gray, much like a newspaper photo. It is huge. 12 ft high and 25 feet wide. There is one color you might expect to see in a painting depicting war that's missing. It hangs at the Prado, a museum in Madrid, Spain. Guernica, 1937

This woman was actually very beautiful
This woman was actually very beautiful. But Picasso knew that on the inside she was very unhappy. She looks as if she has received some terrible news and is literally falling apart. Tate Gallery, London Weeping Woman 1937

His originality. The thing that made Picasso such a great artist was
While Picasso chose many different subjects and styles, people who knew him believed that all were biographical. Inspiration came from events in his personal life- from friends, family, as well as larger events such as war. He had the imagination to try new and different things through his entire life. He created over 50,000 works of art.
