2 Homework Review I wear clothes that are made in China. Today, we get our clothes from many far away places. My cell phone shows that my society has communication technology. The Iceman’s technology was his copper axe and finely stitched clothing. Analyze the clothes you wear and the things you carry to school. What do they say about your life? How does your story compare to the Iceman’s story?

9 What Have I Learned? What have I learned this week? Be specific.
How did I learn? What did I do?

10 What Have I Learned? What have I learned this week? Be specific.
I learned that scientists study tools, artifacts, mummies, and oral traditions in order to understand the past before writing was invented. How did I learn? What did I do? I examined tools to figure out how they were used. I discussed the Iceman with my group. I read an example of an oral tradition.

11 Oral Traditions VOCAB WORD Stories passed down by word of mouth Before a written language, this was how people passed along information. Can include: Stories Jokes Riddles Religious beliefs Why are oral traditions important for historians to study?

12 An Oral Tradition from the Inuits
Inuit is the name given to the people who are native to the region today known as Alaska. Native = people who has been in that place for a long time One of their oral traditions is about how the Bowhead Whale came to their region. With your group, read the story. Then, respond to the thinking questions on the back.

13 Gift of the Whale 1. Why did the Great Spirit give the whale to the Inupiaq people? They needed it for food, warmth, shelter. 2. “He made a special time each spring, when the ice of the ocean would break apart to form a road where the whales could swim.” What event do you think this is describing? In spring, when the temperature rises, the ice thaws, and whales swim in the open water

14 3. What do you think is the “thick mist that would hang between the sea and sky?”
Clouds, or mist 4. What do you think was the purpose of this story to the Inupiaq people? It explained the spring season, the clouds, and gave them a reason to hunt the whales.

15 6. What does this story tell you about the Inupiaq people?
5. Why would historians (people who study history) studying the Inupiaq people want to study this story? It explains the people’s beliefs, how the people lived, and what they believed to be important. 6. What does this story tell you about the Inupiaq people? They valued every part of the whale.
