1 Developments of UK travel and tourism industry
Intro to Unit 1 task 5

2 Unit 1 …. Task 5 Your task is to compile a chart illustrating the development of the UK travel and tourism industries from the 1930’s to the present day. You should consider all of the following: Transport developments Increased disposable income Increased leisure time Holiday camps Package holidays Government involvement Changing expectations

3 Do you think tourism has been around for centuries?
Do you think people like the one opposite used to go on holiday? Only a few did and it was probably once in a lifetime. It was rare for people to travel any further than the nearest town. Could you imagine never going any further than Dorking

4 Stage coach The stage coach was slow and expensive, the average journey would cost 21 shillings ( which is £1000 today). Nevertheless in peak years, over 250 stage coaches left London everyday. Can you imagine what it was like to ride in one of these? Most journeys took days to get there and many passengers were sick.

5 Trains In 1825 Stephenson Locomotion signalled the arrival of the steam train and the end of the stage coach. By 1830 it was possible to travel on a passenger train from Manchester to Liverpool have a good time, and get back to Manchester the same day. By the end of the 2nd world war (1940’s) the rail network covered nearly every town and village.

6 Cars Mr Daimler and Mr Benz are recognised as being mostly responsible for the car. By the early 1900’s the car was being used for public transport in most cities. But it wasn't until the 1950 when the car really took off.

7 Ships Up until the 1920’s the only way to travel abroad was by boat.
It used to take days/ weeks to travel abroad. Now ships are mainly used for ferries to mainland Europe and for cruises

8 Aeroplanes The first commercial flight from the UK was to Paris in 1919, but it was very expensive. In the 1970 the introduction of the Boeing 747 brought flying cost down dramatically and open doors to mass tourism.

9 Your task – the history of Transport for tourism!
You need to collect images of different forms of transport early to most modern for Trains Cars Coaches/busses Aeroplanes Cruise ships / ferries /hovercraft And put them onto a time line from early 1900’s to today. You can either do this in Publisher Or manually – onto poster paper using scissors and glue! Remember – they all have to be for transport people on holidays! Preferably from the UK
