2 Habitat and Ecosystem Notes 10.1

3 A place where an organism lives and where it obtains all the things it needs to survive.
Habitat

4 Ecosystem The community of organisms in an area along with their nonliving surroundings.

5 There are many Habitats within an Ecosystem.
Difference between Habitat and ecosystem Habitat is talking about one organism and its specific needs and Ecosystem refers to many organisms and how they relate to each other and their environment. There are many Habitats within an Ecosystem.

11 Communities and Populations

12 A group of organisms that are physically similar and can mate with each other and produce offspring that can mate with each other. Species

13 Population All the members of one species in a particular area.

14 Community All the different populations that live together in an area.

15 Levels of Organization
The smallest level of organization is a single organism, which belongs to a population that includes other members of its species.

16 Levels of Organization
The population belongs to a community of different species.

17 Levels of Organization
The community and abiotic factors together form an ecosystem.

30 Warm-up # 5 Label each example as a organism, population or community.
Butterflies in a Garden Rattlesnakes in the Santa Monica Mountains. A tiger at the zoo. Red Ladybugs on a milkweed plant. The trees at CCMS. The dogs at the pound. The fish in the Great Barrier Reef. The Killer Whales at Sea World.

31 Warm-up # 6 What are the 7 things all living things do?
What is the difference between a community and an ecosystem? What are the levels of ecological organization from the smallest unit to the largest unit. What is a habitat for a prairie dog?

32 Warm-Up # 7 Describe a forest ecosystem.
What is the difference between a habitat and an ecosystem. List 3 populations you might find in the ocean. What are 3 habitats found in a forest ecosystem. What is the difference between a population and a community.
