Think… and answer! 1- Can you explain how precipitation affects salinity in oceans? 2- Can you explain how evaporation affects salinity in oceans?

OCEAN CURRENTS NOTES
5
Water Current:A stream of water flowing in a common direction.
6
2 Types of Currents: Deep Currents Surface Currents
7
1. Deep Currents Deep ocean currents are caused by differences in water temperature and salinity.
8
As you dive deeper into the ocean, the temperature decreases.
Warm water with low salinity As you dive deeper into the ocean, the temperature decreases. As you dive Deeper into the ocean, the salinity increases. Cold water goes down, Warm water goes up Cold water with high salinity -Salty water goes down, Fresh water goes up
9
Partner 1 ask partner 2- As you increase in depth, what happens to the water’s temperature and salinity? Partner 2 will reply by saying: As you increase in depth, the water’s temperature ______ and its salinity _________.
10
2. Surface Currents Driven by prevailing wind mainly effect the upper few hundred meters of the ocean.
11
SURFACE CURRENTS are controlled by 3 main factors:
3. The location of the Continents. 2. Air Currents 1. Earth’s Rotation
12
Partner 2 ask partner 1 What 3 factors affect surface currents? Partner 1 will Reply by Saying: The 3 factors that affect surface currents are: _____________________________.
13
Prevailing Wind moving across the surface of the ocean causes the water to move and flow creating currents
14
Due to the continents, the currents are deflected to the North and South to create circular currents called gyres.
15
The gyres spin:clockwise in the Northern hemisphere counter-clockwise in the Southern hemisphere because of the Coriolis effect
16
1 to 2 What direction do ocean currents move in the northern hemisphere and in the southern hemisphere? 2 to 1 Ocean currents move _______ in the northern hemisphere and _____ in the southern hemisphere.
17
Surface currents can carry warm or cold water which can impact the climate in that area.
Warm water Cold water
18
COLD CALIFORNIA CURRENT
WARM GULF STREAM CURRENT WARM KUROSHIO CURRENT Cold California Current WARM South EQUATORIAL CURRENT
20
Atlantic Ocean Found on the East Coast of the United States
Second largest ocean More inflow from rivers than other oceans Second youngest of the oceans
21
Pacific Ocean Found on the West Coast of the United States
Largest ocean Contains more islands than other oceans Where El Niño and La Niña occur Where the Ring of Fire occurs
22
Artic Ocean Found at the North Pole Home of the Polar Ice Cap
Smallest of the oceans
23
Indian Ocean Warmest ocean in the world Youngest of the oceans
Affected by monsoons
24
Antarctic Ocean Found at the South Pole 4th largest ocean
30 million years old

The first ones are called ___________________ they are caused by _____________________ ________________________. As you increase in ocean depth, temperature_________ and salinity__________. The second type of ocean currents are ________________. They are driven by the ___________ and are controlled by _______________, ________________, and ________________________.
