1 Nomenclature Element – A unique form of matter that serves as a building material for more complex matter. Elements cannot be broken apart into two different substances. -Each element has a name and a chemical symbol Ex: Gold – Au, Silver – Ag, Hydrogen – H -A symbol is never more than two letters and the first letter is always capitalized (some symbols have only one letter)

2 Nomenclature Important to note: CO vs. Co and HF vs. Hf
NOTE THE DIFFERENCE! CO – carbon AND oxygen Co – cobalt HF – hydrogen AND flourine Hf - hafnium

3 Nomenclature (s) – (l) – (g) – (aq) – solid liquid gas aqueous
(dissolved in water)

4 Nomenclature Note the subscripts!
Chemical Formula – A set of symbols a chemist uses to represent a compound. Carbon dioxide is a compound and has the chemical formula CO2 Compound – A substance that consists of two or more elements chemically combined together -Some groups of elemental symbols have names Ex: OH – hydroxide, NO3 – nitrate Note the subscripts!

5 Nomenclature Names for Type I Binary Ionic Compounds
There are usually two parts to the formula. Ex. NaCl  Na (sodium) and Cl (chlorine) For the first part of the name, simply write the element name. For the second part of the name, add “-ide” to the end of an element. Ex. chlorine  chloride Special Rule! Some second parts of names are compounds. Use the names next to the compounds: NO3 – nitrate SO4 – sulfate OH – hydroxide

6 Using the Language of Chemistry
Problems: Write the names of the following compounds: 1. Al(NO3)3 2. Ho 3. CaCl2 4. Np 5. MnS2 6. Cf 7. LiBr 8. Na2O 9. No 10. K2SO4 11. NaOH 12. Hs Answers: 1. aluminum nitrate 2. holmium 3. calcium chloride 4. neptunium 5. manganese sulfide 6. californium 7. lithium bromide 8. sodium oxide 9. nobelium 10. potassium sulfate 11. sodium hydroxide 12. hassium
