1. Expected Value Practice
A landscaper can cut 8 lawns a day if it is
sunny, and only 3 a day if it rains. If there is
a 40% chance of rain on a given day, what is the
expected value of how many lawns will get cut?
Two people are playing a game by rolling a 6
sided die. If a 5 or 6 is rolled, the person gains 3
points. If they roll a 3 or 4, they gain 1 point. If a
1 or 2 is rolled, they lose 2 points. What is the
expected value for the players of the game?
A football team averages 65,000 people at the
game on sunny days, and only 20,000 on rainy days.
If there is a 30% chance of rain on gameday, how
many people can be expected to attend?
An investor is trying to decide whether to invest
in a new business being started. They have been
told that there is a 40% chance that each investor
will make a profit of 30,000, a 30% chance of breaking
even, and 30% chance of losing 20,000. How much’
can the investor expect to make?

2. A company is offering voluntary training sessions for their
employees Mondays-Fridays. The sessions on Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursdays averaged 30 employees promising
to attend and the sessions on Monday and Friday only averaged
12 employees saying they would come. How many employees
can the company expect to come overall?
On a standardized test, each question has 5 choices. Correct
answers are worth 3 points, incorrect answers cost the students
4 points, and unanswered questions do not count at all. What
is the expected value for each question on the Test?
