NOTES: DNA Replication
Friday NOTES: DNA Replication
2
(1) Why Replicate DNA? Happens during S-Phase of Cell Cycle
Need a second copy of DNA for daughter cells (of Mitosis / Meiosis).
4
(2) Replication Steps Unwind DNA. Unzip / Separate the 2 strands.
Match up complimentary bases/nucleotides. Bond the new strand to the old strand. *Enzymes do all of the work! RESULT: 2 DNA Molecules Each Molecule = 1 template strand, 1 daughter strand
7
(3) Complimentary Bases
REMEMBER: Nitrogenous Bases are connected to nucleotides. Always Match Up… A with T T with A G with C C with G
9
(4) Semi-Conservative Discovered by Messelson & Stahl. Semi = Half
Conservative = Saved Each new DNA molecule maintains ½ the original molecule (template), and has ½ a new strand!
11
(5) 3’ 5’ 3’ = Three Prime 5’ = Five Prime
(5) 3’ 5’ 3’ = Three Prime 5’ = Five Prime New, complimentary bases are laid down along the parent strand in the 3’ to 5’ direction. The enzymes which unwind DNA and make the new strand only move in this direction!
