Energy and Chemical Reactions
Physical Science Chapter 10.2 Part 2
2
Our Story So Far … Discuss with your partner, discuss with the class.
How do you balance a chemical equation? What is activation energy and why is it important? What is an addition reaction? What is a decomposition reaction?
3
Displacement and precipitation reactions
Aka replacement reactions One element replaces a similar element in a compound Fe(s) + CuCl2(aq) Cu(s) + FeCl2(aq) One for the substances formed is no longer soluble CO2(g) + CaO2H2(aq) CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)
4
Combustion Reaction Petroleum (gasoline) is a hydrocarbon made of hydrogen and carbon (and oxygen and nitrogen and sulfur) left over from ancient plant and animal life Petroleum is refined (separated) into gasoline, kerosene, and heating oil. Gasoline undergoes an combustion reaction that yields carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water, nitrogen oxides, and sulfuric acid
5
Nuclear Reactions Nuclear reactions are not chemical reactions
They change the nucleus of an atom One element becomes a different element One isotope becomes a different isotope Involves strong nuclear force and produces a lot of energy Mass + energy is conserved (but not mass & energy) E = mc2
6
Nuclear Reaction
7
Activity Identify types of chemical reactions Due at end of class
