1 FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS

2 Words to Know Producer – an organism that makes it’s own food *Plants are producers Consumers – an organism that has to eat to get energy

3 Types of Consumers herbivore – an organism that only eats plants carnivore - an organism that only eats meat omnivore – an organism that eats meat and plants

4 Decomposers Break down dead plants and animals
Bacteria and fungi are two examples Reduces dead organisms to simpler forms of matter Returns them to the soil

5 Biotic Factors Biotic Factor: living part of an organism’s habitat
Living things, get their energy from the sun.

6 Biotic Factors Energy is obtained for plants through photosynthesis
Plant use the sunlight to make sugar, animals get the sugar by eating the plants other animals by eating the plant grazers

7 Abiotic Factors Abiotic Factors: nonliving parts of an organisms habitat Sunlight, clear water, and water depth

8 Abiotic Factors Light is needed for photosynthesis
Example: in a coral reef ecosystem, light travels to the underwater plants due to the clear water. Light travels best in clear water. Energy from the sun gets smaller in deeper water.

9 Food Chain Shows how each living thing gets food
Always begins with the producer Arrows show the flow of energy from one organism to another

10 Build a Food Chain Click on the links below to build a food chain:
Chain Reaction Game Food Chain Game

11 Food Web A collection of food chains interconnected from the same ecosystem Arrows show the flow of energy from one organism to another Multiple consumers and producers

12 Build a Food Web Click on the links below to build a food web:
Fun with Food Webs

13 Energy Pyramid Shows the amounts of energy available at each trophic level of an ecosystem The higher in the pyramid, the less energy available

14 Find Out More About Energy Pyramids
