Lesson 6 August 31st, 2010

2 Food Chains and Food Webs
Series of events where one organism eats another and obtains energy. The chain always begins with the sun First organism in the chain is the producer.

3 Food Chain Animals are placed in categories based on their trophic level The final carnivore in a food chain is called the top carnivore. They are not eaten by other carnivores while they are alive.

4

5 Food Webs Animals usually eat more than one organism for sustenance
Consists of many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem. Some organisms may play more than one role by changing consumer levels. Ecosystems with more biodiverse food webs are more stable.

6 Food Web

7 Energy Pyramids Shows the amount of available energy the producers and consumers contain as energy flows through the ecosystem 60 % of energy contained in food passes through animals as waste 30 % is used for cellular respiration 10 % is used to make, bone, muscle, and fat.

8 Energy Pyramids Only 10 % of the energy consumed is passed on to the next consumer. The more levels there are between the producer and final consumer the less energy is left over.
