Food Chains / Webs Unit 1 Day 2
4
Food Webs Trophic Level
How directly a consumer interacts with its producers in an ecosystem. (feeding level)
5
Food Webs
6
Food Webs 5th Trophic Level Quarternary Consumers Tertiary Consumers carnivore 4th Trophic Level carnivore 3rd Trophic Level Secondary Consumers carnivore Primary Consumers 2nd Trophic Level 1st Trophic Level herbivore Producer
7
Food Webs Food Chain: A feeding sequence in which each kind of organism eats the one below it in the chain. Arrows mean (eaten by), and they also show the movement of food energy in the system.
8
Food Webs The organisms in a food chain are dependent on one another.
Any change in a particular trophic level will affect all of the other levels (below and above).
9
Food Webs Example: Grass Grasshopper Frog Snake Owl
10
Food Webs Grass Grasshopper Frog Snake Owl If the frog population is removed then there is a gap in the feeding order... Without a food source, the snake would die, as would the owls. The grasshoppers, with no natural predators, would increase in numbers. Eventually they would eat all the grass and die as well. This single chain is not realistic
11
Food Webs In any area there are many chains which interconnect. Most consumers have many different food sources, so if one is limited they can switch to another. This is referred to as a food web Food Web = interconnecting food chains
