1 What is the File System?

2 File System Your computer’s file system provides a place to store things on disk File system is organized into folders and subfolders Imagine you have a 26 drawer filing cabinet ordered by alphabetical letters In each drawer maybe there are 26 folders ordered alphabetically You place your favorite grade school paper about Aardvarks into the first folder in the first drawer

3 File Explorer File Explorer is the application you use to find or create files in your file system. Click Start -> File Explorer Click any of the Folder Icons to explore what is in that folder Equivalent to opening a drawer Watch the address bar at the top – this shows the “path” to that folder location As you click further into folders this is equivalent to opening a folder within a drawer Look for your Aardvark paper

4 Create a New File When you’ve reached the folder you’d like to create your file in Right click on the surface of the folder content area and select New -> Text Document Type the name you’d like to give to your new document – like Aardvark.txt Hit Enter to complete

5 Edit Your New File From the folder you created your file in
Right click on the file name and select Edit or Open With A text editor will open the file (with the help of the OS) and allow you to edit the file Go back to File Explorer and click within the Address Bar – this will select the current file path (C:\Users\johnd\Documents\CMU\CSCI 100) Copy and paste the current file path into your text document Type a \ at the end of your file path in the text editor (C:\Users\johnd\Documents\CMU\CSCI 100\)

6 Edit Your New File (Continued)
From the folder you created your file in Go back to File Explorer, right click on the file name and select Rename – this will change the file name display to an edit window (you’re not going to rename the file, this just lets you copy the filename) Select the entire file name (including the file extension .txt) and copy Paste the filename (including extension) at the end of the file path in your text document (C:\Users\johnd\Documents\CMU\CSCI 100\New Text Document.txt) Save your file and then upload to D2L dropbox

Flash drive Network storage Tape backup Cloud storage/cloud computing Advantages? Disadvantages? Would you trust your personal data in the cloud? Would you trust your business data in the cloud?
