KISS Ordering & Prioritising giving examples and backing up your views dealing with negatives (turning them into positives) Put your best foot forward. Being relevant. Focused. Give them what they want! Not what you want!

KISS ( "keep it short and simple") – listing. I have a problem, can you help me ? Sure, what’s up? Can’t speak English / dance / sing well.

4 Prioritise (most->least)
Q. Who do you like most in your family / the least? Why? Who are your top 3. (celebs, sports, foods) Q. Was Dong-A your first choice? Rank them. Q. What jobs would you do? … rank them. “Firstly, … then … after that … ” (could also play the “OR” game).

5 So, Organisation is ... If you need to organise things the best way is a prioritised list... Firstly, Secondly, Finally. Then, Next, After that Additionally, Also. Q. What did you do on Saturday? Firstly, I (v.past) + _______ , Then I

6 Provide Examples & Support
Examples can take the form of:  Look for transitional use in Unit 12C Use anecdotes (personal stories to illustrate) Use phrases “My Prof says .. “,”My friends say I’m”

7 Backing up your answers
Which one is better? I am funny. OR All my friends say I’m funny. I am service minded. OR I am service-minded … for example … Q. What kind of person are you? Describe yourself. Q. Tell me about yourself. Q. What (skills) are you good at? Q. What are your strengths? NB** Some Q’s are very similar and you can answer in the same way!!

9 Be Relevant How would you describe yourself as a person?
I’m funny, a womanizer(playboy) and like drinking with my mates. I’d describe myself as hard working, motivated, and a team player. (firstly) I worked hard at Uni to get good grades, (secondly)... (should answer both) "That's a tough question... I like both. It's great working in teams because ______ , but it's also nice to work alone because _______ .” Follow up Q – “Do you see yourself as a leader or follower?”

What are the steps in solving a problem ? - What do you do when you're having difficulty solving a problem?

15 Prob-Solutions 1. What do you do when you’re having difficulty solving a problem? 2. What do you do when you have a problem with your boss / a co-worker / a subordinate / a friend? 3. How do you handle conflict? "Whenever I'm confronted with a conflict, I always follow a simple process. I think about what the current conflict is, think of several ways I can deal with this conflict, and then take the best action after my analysis."

16 Skills – dealing with Negatives
Minimise the negative and maximise the positive. Show improvement. Show change. Try not to say “not” or “no”. Maybe *** Start with something positive (and related), state the negative information succinctly without dwelling on it, and then end with another positive.

Tell me about a bad time in your life. (Minimise negative, show change) “I was a little unhealthy when I was younger. Now I watch what I eat and exercise regularly and am healthy”

18 Turning Negatives into Positives.
What are your weaknesses? “I feel my English ability is lacking (however/ but) I’m working hard on improving this. I’m doing this by ...”. “I’m a little disorganised sometimes. (however/ but) I’ve realised this problem and I’m trying to ...” (+/-) “I try to do everything myself. This sometimes slows me down and I should get other people to help me”.

Tell me about something you're not proud of. Describe a difficult person you have worked with. What do you dislike most about your current position (or organization)? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Tell me how you have handled a difficult peer (boss) (subordinate) What criticisms have supervisors had about your work style? In what type of business environment is it most difficult for you to function? Why did you leave your last position? (Be brief, consistent, and stick to a pre-determined, positive reason for leaving)

20 Easy. What’s your personality like? Use 6-8 words and be ready to explain what you mean. Describe your typical mood or feeling in these situations: Early in the morning Evening at home after school or work On weekends (Friday and Saturday nights, Saturday afternoon, Sunday) At a social event, party, bar/club etc. What are you habits around the house? Are you clean/messy/organized/etc.? Chores?

21 Job talk ... Who has a part-time job at present? How did you get it?
If not, then what would you consider doing? What job do you want in the future? What company do you want to work for? Why do you want to work? What do you ultimately want to achieve? Are you worried about your ability to find a job? Why?
