2. Giving A Speech
Giving a formal speech goes beyond just reading your essay to the class.
For this speech we will focus on:
Expression and Delivery
Eye Contact
Body Language
Speaking Rate(Use of pauses)
And also on Audience Engagement and Rhetorical Elements

3. What do I Speak About? For this Argumentative Speech you should :
1) clearly state the policy that needs to be changed
2) provide evidence (cite your sources) and support for your position
3) provide one counterargument with rebuttal
4) provide a conclusion/call to action

4. How Long Must My Speech Be?
For the purposes of this practice speech, you will give a speech that is as close to 90 seconds to 2 minutes as possible.

5. How Will I be Graded?
Let’s take a look at the next few slides and see a progression from a non proficient speaker to a masterful speaker…

6. Non Proficient 4-6 points/10
Speaker was hard to hear or understand;
Voice or tone distracted from purpose of speech;
Excessive use of verbal fillers;
Speech marginally rehearsed, distracting use of notes;
Little eye contact with audience;
Poor, slouchy, or fidgety posture.

7. Proficient 7-8 points/10 Speaker was easy to hear and understand;
Tone was conversational, purposeful;
Voice sounded natural, neither patterned nor monotone;
Speaker pronounced words clearly, correctly, with only a few verbal fillers;
Speech clearly rehearsed, mostly memorized;
Strong eye contact with entire audience;
Posture conveyed confidence.

8. Masterful – 9-10 points/10
Speaker was enjoyable to hear; used expression and emphasis;
Speaker used voice to create an emotional response in audience;
Speech is rehearsed/memorized; minimal use of notes;
Posture was commanding and purposeful.

9. Audience Engagement & Rhetorical Elements 1-10 points
Speaker dynamically incorporates:
Logos (Logic)
Pathos (Emotion)
Ethos (Ethics/credibility)
Audience is moved, impressed, and impacted on multiple levels: logically, emotionally, ethically
Sources cited clearly and completely during speech

10. What’s Our Process?
Friday/Weekend – Draft your Argumentative speech in class, using your Argumentative essay;
Tuesday-Wednesday – Practice your speech in groups of 4, and then begin Argumentative speech presentations.

11. Note Cards--- Keep your notes brief 1. Write notes on one side only
Limit lines on cards to 3 per card
Number your cards on the top right hand corner
Write out quotes and author to cite your sources accurately
