Learning objective – to be able to understand the nature of the position of the Church in early Tudor society. I can describe the different features of the Church’s role in Tudor society. Grade D I can explain the power of Church and its relationship with the monarch. Grade B I can explain and analyse the relationship between the Church and the monarch in early Tudor England. The role of the Pope The Pope was Head of the Roman Catholic Church.
Key responsibilities of appointing senior clerics. The monarch of England did have a say, especially as the Pope was living a distance away.

Key functions of the Church
Performed acts of worship. Key source of charity and care. Preached good works would benefit all. Preached the existence of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory where what you did in this life decided your fate in the next. Celebrated religious holidays. The main source of education.

Growing anticlericalism
Growth of Humanist ideas. Growing unease of Church corruption. Growing unease towards the benefit of the clergy. Impact of the Hunne Affair. Ideas of Martin Luther.

Church is still popular
Church was still left money and land – making it the largest landowner in the country. Church festivals were still very popular with the people. The Church remained a central part of people’s lives, particularly those places further away from London.

The following states summarise key moments in the relationship between the State and the Church between 1485 and Sort them into two lists – Good relations and difficult relations. The Hunne Case The Church formally supports Henry VII claim to the throne. Growth of Humanist thinking in Tudor society. Closure of some monasteries in the mid 1520s. Appointment of Thomas Wolsey as Cardinal in 1515. Henry VII passing laws to limit the benefit of the clergy. Henry VIII begins annulment proceedings in 1527. Appointment of John Morton as Archbishop of Canterbury. Henry VIII’s defence of the Church in 1521.
