Section 6.5 applications of systems of equations
solving application problems using systems of equations. SWBAT:
3
Which method to choose? Graphing: a useful method to approximate a solution and having a visual model. Use when equations are in slope-int form. Substitution: use when you have one variable that has a coefficient of 1 (x or y is by itself) Linear Combination/Elimination: use when the coefficients are larger than 1.
4
Ex. 1: Solve using all three methods
2x + 3y = 5 4x – y = 3
5
Ex. 2: Which method is better?
x + 3y = -3 4x – 5y = 5 x – y = 9 7x + y = 7 y = 2x – 1 y = ½x – 1

Ex. 3: Applications pg 364 #2 y = 3x + 50 y = 5x + 0
Jared has volunteered 50 hours and plans to volunteer 3 hours in each coming week. Clementine is a new volunteer who plans to volunteer 5 hours each week. Write and solve a system of equation to find how long it will be before they will have volunteered the same amount of hours. y = 3x + 50 y = 5x + 0
