1 Caricature Masks Gr. 9 Art

2 When working with clay…
Remember that you don’t want your mask form to be more than about ¼” thick. Remember to SLIP and SCORE any clay that you add to your form. Remember to keep your clay wrapped in wet paper towel to prevent it from drying out. Remember to put it on your plate, LABEL IT, and keep it in your plastic bag. Remember that bumps and ridges will become more prominent as the clay dries, so get your mask as smooth as possible.

3 Your Assignment Create a mask the size of your plate using the pinch pot method to create your form. Start with a ball of clay Dig your thumbs in and begin pinching the clay to spread it out. Mold the clay to create a form with a flat edge and a bulge in the middle. Use additional clay to create facial features and to build up your mask. You need to create a caricature (face with exaggerated features) or monster. Do not try to create a realistic face.

4 Clean up… ALL TOOLS MUST BE CLEANED BEFORE BEING WASHED!
DO NOT WASH TOOLS WHICH HAVE EXCESS CLAY ON THEM! ALL TOOLS MUST BE WASHED IN MR. PERRY’S ROOM IF THEY REQUIRE WASHING. Many of the tools can simply be cleaned without being washed. Make sure your mat is put away and that your desk is clean. Make sure you put all of the tools back where they belong.
