1 Indoor Air Quality Weicaiying

2 Facts and Figures: People will inhale about 4 million cubic air in their life. People spend about 70%-80% of their time indoors. Due to our more tightly sealed homes and workplaces, the concentration(浓度) of pollutants indoors may be dozens of times higher than that of outdoors. Among the pollutants indoors, about 20 may lead to cancer. About 35.7% of the respiratory problems are caused by indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution has been listed as one of the ten top health threats to human beings.

3 Importance of awareness of possible
Skim the passage and work out the main idea of each paragraph: Para. : Importance of awareness of possible indoor air quality problems in schools. Para. : Sources of poor indoor air quality. Para. : Dangers of poor indoor air quality. Para. : Some measures to deal with the problem.

4 Why is the awareness of IAQ problems important for both teachers and students?
--- more occupants per square meter in a school --- growing student population

5 1. An awareness of possible indoor air quality
alike adj. & adv. 1. An awareness of possible indoor air quality problems is important for teachers and students alike. (adv.) 2. The Vanbrugh sisters look remarkably alike in appearance. (adj.) 3. The children in this school are all treated alike. (adv.)

6 Sources of most indoor air pollution:
_______________ harmful elements from manufactured wood products, pesticides, etc. B. _______________ from laboratories and toilets other pollutants outdoor polluted air through windows and openings C. _________________

Transitional words (过渡词) For example … Other pollutants may also … Meanwhile … can also … first of all; to start with;besides; in addition; in the first/second/third place; what’s more; furthermore; moreover; last but not least…

First of all In addition What’s more Last but not least

9 What are the sources of air pollution in our classroom?
dust produced by chalk dirty smelly clothes, shoes … recycled air paints on the board/ furniture viruses carried by sick ones

10 What are the dangers of poor IAQ?
---causing serious respiratory problems

11 Some measures to deal with the problem:
increasing ventilation rates B. _______________________ banning smoking C. __________________________________________ storing paints and pesticides in closed containers D. ________________________________________ _________________ using pollutant sources in periods of low or no occupancy E. __________________________________________ educating people about the problem

12 Suggest some ways to reduce the indoor air pollution in our classroom.
paying attention to personal hygiene using dustless chalk dust produced by chalk dirty smelly clothes, shoes … recycled air paints on the board/furniture viruses carried by sick ones improve ventilation choosing green products building up our body having some plants

13 Outline I. Introduction II. Body III. Conclusion
Importance of awareness of possible IAQ problems in schools. (para.1) II. Body a. Sources of poor IAQ. (para. 2) b. Dangers of poor IAQ. (para. 3) III. Conclusion Some measures to deal with the problem. (para. 4)

14 Use one word to summarize what we have learned in this lesson and tell us why.
e.g. I’d like to use “awareness” to summarize what I have learned in this lesson because, of all the measures to take, to make people aware of the problem should be on top of the list. Only when people are fully aware of the problem will they take it seriously and take action to solve it.

15 Homework Review the text and try to recite it.
Read a supplementary material and finish the exercise.
