2 What is a Colony? Colony = a territory that is legally tied to a sovereign state rather than being independent. Sovereign state may run only its military and foreign policy. Sovereign state may also control its internal affairs.

3 Why Colonize? GOD, GOLD, & GLORY!!!
Colonialism = an effort by one country to establish settlement in a territory and to impose its political, economic, and cultural principles on that territory. European states established colonies for 3 basic reasons: To promote Christianity To extract useful resources and to serve as captive markets for their products To establish relative power through the number of their colonies

4 Where were the Colonies?
Initially in the Western Hemisphere United States – became independent in 1776 Latin America – most gained independence between Next, Africa & Asia Most became independent after World War II

6 Who were the Colonizers?
The 2 Largest Colonial Empires: United Kingdom Colonies on every Continent – “the sun never sets on the British Empire” Largest Empire: much of eastern & southern Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, Australia, & Canada France 2nd largest empire Primarily in West Africa & Southeast Asia Most of Frances former colonies are still closely linked to France

7 Are there Any Colonies Left?
U.S. Department of State lists 68 places in the world that it calls dependencies and areas of special sovereignty. Most current colonies are islands in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Ex. Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the U.S., is home to 4 million residents who are U.S. citizens, but they do not participate in U.S. election or have a voting member of Congress.
