Mesoderm or mesenchyme gives rise to blood islands and the muscular heart. Blood islands: precursors of blood vessels (angiogenesis) and blood cells (hematopoiesis) Heart: immediately contractile; has four embryonic chambers: sinus venosus, atrium, ventricle, bulbus cordis

4 Components of Blood Plasma: liquid medium, matrix of special connective tissue (blood) Formed elements: Erythrocytes (RBCs): oxygen-carriers Leucocytes (WBCs): against infection and disease Thrombocytes (platelets): blood-clotting
