2 SCIENCE TOOLS To become a successful scientists, we must be able to identify and use scientific instruments or tools. These tools are for collecting data, taking measurements, and recording observations. Scientists use a variety of tools to do investigations.

3 Beaker An open cylindrical container with a pouring lip.
Used to carry and pour liquids. Not used for measuring or mixing liquids because the graduations are broad and inaccurate.

4 Erlenmeyer Flask Used to mix solutions
Has a narrow top and broad bottom, things don’t splash out easily. Best to use a funnel to pour liquids into this piece of glassware.

5 Graduated Cylinder Tall narrow piece of glassware used to measure the volume of liquids Marked with precise graduations Cylindrical in shape

6 Funnel May be glass or plastic
Used to pour liquids through small openings Can be used for filtration.

7 Test Tube A test tube is smaller than a beaker.
It is open at one end and closed at the other. It is cylindrical in shape. We hold these using test tube tongs or holders

8 Test Tube Rack Safely holds test tube being used in an experiment
Open bottom allows scientists to be able to witness is there is a color change or precipitate formation

9 Tongs Used to grasp hot beakers or flasks
Also used to hold test tubes over open flames

10 Safety Goggles Eyewear that protects the eyes during a science experiment or investigation from hazardous or dangerous materials.

11 Goggles Required safety equipment
Prevents chemicals from being splashed in your eyes.

12 Thermometer A tool used to measure temperature.
It measures the temperature of air and most liquids. The Greek prefix “therm” means “heat”.

13 Balance A tool used to measure the mass of an object.
A balance tells the amount of matter an object contains.

14 A tool used to heat objects.
Hot Plate A tool used to heat objects.

15 Meter Stick A meter tool that is used to measure distance and the length of objects. It tells how long an object is. In science, we use the metric system for measuring.

16 Hand Lens A tool that magnifies objects or makes objects look larger than they are.

17 Microscope A tool that magnifies at a much higher power than a hand lens. It magnifies smaller objects or makes smaller objects larger.

18 Computer An electronic tool that performs tasks by processing and storing information.

19 Telescope A tool used to see objects in the sky.
It magnifies or makes objects in the sky larger.

20 Compass A tool for telling directions.
It is used to find Earth’s magnetic north pole.

21 Stopwatch A tool used to measure time.

22 Magnet A magnet attracts and repels substances.
It is attracted or pulled to items with iron, nickel, or steel.

23 Collecting Net A tool used to gather animal samples or specimens such as butterflies.

24 Petri Dish A container used for samples or specimens.
A tool to culture microorganisms.

25 Calculators An electronic device for solving mathematics problems
