Problems may arise during any of these functions

Oral Disorders Oral Cancer May form in any part of the mouth or throat
Usually begins on the tongue or the floor of the mouth

Contributing Risk Factors:
Male Over the age of 40 Tobacco use Drinker Sun exposure (for lip cancer)

Symptoms White or red patches in your mouth
Mouth sore that will not heal Bleeding Loose teeth Problems or pain with swallowing A lump in the neck Earache

Periodontal Diseases Diseases of the gum
Periodontal: “around the tooth” Chronic bacterial infections that affect the gums and bones supporting the teeth

Gingivitis Mildest form of periodontal disease Causes gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily Reversible Usually a result of poor oral hygiene

If left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis
Plaque grows and spreads below the gum line Bacteria in plaque produce toxins and irritate the gums and supporting bones Tissue and bone that support the teeth are damaged then destroyed

There are many forms of periodontitis
“Trench Mouth” or necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis Infection characterized by necrosis of gingival tissue, ligaments, or bone

Tends to develop rapidly
Often more painful than other gum diseases Usually seen in patients who are malnourished, immune-suppressed, or HIV positive Called “Trench Mouth” because it was often seen in WWI soldiers who fought in the trenches

Treatment Dentist will remove necrosed tissue Keep area clean
Rinse mouth with salt water or antibacterial mouthwash Avoid smoking and alcohol
