What is Government? Government – a group of people that have the power to make and enforce laws for a country or area. The basic purpose of a government is to keep order, provide services and protect the people. Government power can be held by one person, a few people, or a majority. What are some services a countries government provide? In the U.S., what are some services states and cities provide?

A little more about governments……
Governments come in different forms. The basic law and principals that determines the form of government is called a Constitution.

India gained their independence from Great Britain in 1947, after the British controlled the area for almost 200 years.

A little more about governments……
Modern governments have many jobs including: providing security for the country; establish a system of justice and keep order; provide basic services; regulating the economy; establishing educational systems

Governments come in many different forms, however they are either limited or unlimited in power.
Unlimited Governments – the government holds all power. Limited Governments – the government only holds the power the citizens allow.

Republic – the citizens hold political power.
It is a representative democracy The people that are elected vote on laws (congressmen and women, senators) Example – United States

Example - Great Britain
Constitutional Monarchy – laws in the constitution limit the power of the monarch. Have elected representatives that make the laws and run the country. Inherited position. Example - Great Britain

Citizens vote on everything.
Direct Democracy –citizens take part directly in the day-to-day affairs of the country. Citizens vote on everything. Example: Ancient Athens (Greece)

Unlimited Governments

Absolute Monarchy – the monarch has unlimited power over the government.
Inherited position. Monarch appoints trusted relatives or friends to high positions in the government. Example: Saudi Arabia

Dictatorship – leader has complete control over the government.
Harsh punishments or death happen to anyone that challenges or opposes them. Examples: Kim Jong Un - North Korea, Adolf Hitler – Nazi Germany

Oligarchy - A few people such as a dominate group have power.
Power can be from wealth, military, or social status Elections can be held, but offer only one candidate Example- China

Theocracy – a government ran by a religious power.
Rulers are thought to be “divinely guided”. Example: Iran Example: Vatican City
