“It”
2
Do These Guys Have “IT”?
3
What is “IT”? The “It” official has a passion to be the best.
The “It” official is prepared! The “It” official has an athletic look. The “It” official will strive for excellence! The “It’ official is a loyal team player! The difference between average and good and good and great, are the little things. Find “It” – Learn “It” – Live “It” – Do “It”
4
“IT” Do you want it? Why do you want it? What would you do to have it?
How do you know if you have it? How do you know if you don’t have it? How do you get it? How do you get it back? Will you work for it? Who at your position has it? If you find “it” would you share “it”? Would you ask another official what you can do to get more of it?
5
“IT” What if you lose it? Can you buy it? I Wish I had it!
Can you copy it? Can you rent it? Can you bottle it? Can you steal it? Can you buy it? Can you borrow it? Do you think you have it? Others don’t think you have it! Always work to improve “it”!
6
“IT” Be humble Field Presence Commitment Integrity Discipline
Calming Influence Decisive Confident Common Sense Courage Determination Perseverance Patience Understanding Flexibility Balance Communication Consistency Concentration Loyalty
7
“IT” What % of “It” makes a good official. What % of “It” do you want?
If you have 60% of “It” – How do you get more?
8
Do you have “IT”? Some officials seem to have the look!
They have a field presence! They look like they belong! They are confident! They have integrity! They are committed! They have a positive attitude!
9
Most officials know what is best to do. The great ones
know how best to do it. Good officials recognize the problem on the field before it becomes an emergency. Great officials have a way of finding creative ways to use common sense. There comes a critical point in some key games in your career, where without a moment of courage to step up and make the call, you miss the opportunity to be an exceptional official. The fewer excuses you make, the more convincing others are of your abilities.
10
The best officials make the most difficult games appear easiest to officiate.
The best officials return to their “game” quickly after a mistake. The greatest actually see it coming and prevent it. A good official sees as much as he should – but not as much as he can. When you reach the top, the next step is four times more difficult than the previous step it took to get there. The best officials have that extra-special drive to exceed expectations.
11
If you are looking for one word to describe a good football official, decisiveness is a good choice.
The best officials are motivated and driven by the desire to achieve – NOT to be better than other officials The inexperienced official hops from situation to situation. The experienced official finds a “flow” to the game. Winners find a way of associating with winners. One of the differences between a good official and poor official is how they view their mistakes. Mediocre officials recognize their level and work hard to stay there. Those with talent work to improve.
12
If it is the goal of an official to become a varsity official and not improve after “arriving”, the spinning door will kick you in the butt on your way out. A mediocre football official is always at his best. He is a self-made official who owes his lack of success to no one. There are two kinds of officials who never amount to much: Those who cannot do what they are told, and those who can simply do nothing else but what they are told. There are lots of ways to become a failure in officiating, but indecision is the most successful.
13
Show me a thoroughly satisfied official and I will show you one on his way down.
The best coaches and the best officials do two things better than their peers: Prepare better! Adjust better! Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off your goal! Perfection is impossible – Excellence is not! Patience – be patient. Don’t get discouraged. Good things will happen if you continue to work to become a better official. Old saying “The cream will rise to the top”. Success – if you maintain a positive attitude, you will be successful. Have fun. It is a great profession to be a part of.
