Reverse Pitch Challenges
Safer Road Intersections Traffic management cameras are in-place in many urban areas for remote viewing. Analytics are available for identifying targeted content within streaming video. How can automation be used to initiate a wide-range of activities based on pre-defined conditions identified within the video stream that could reduce the number of accidents at intersections, assist pedestrians, or improve bicycle safety. Regional Sharing Issues like traffic management, environment, and public health are not aligned with municipal boundaries. What methods can be used to expand regionalism where large volumes of streaming video and real-time data can be shared on high-speed networks? Live Video Streaming Real-time collaboration between multiple participants in different locations is expensive and complex. Enriching the experience with 3-D streaming video using VR/AR technologies is even more challenging with conventional methods. Given the emergence of low-cost gigabit networks, commercially available VR technologies, and high-end Cloud computing resources, what new and innovative ways could be developed. The ideal solution would enable mid-size businesses to afford remote collaboration as well as having potential for education and entertainment. Digital Infrastructure for the Home The number of devices that we manually monitor and maintain on a daily basis is increasing year over year. Several strategies are available in the marketplace to help the consumer, but they also bring their own challenges. Given the transformative effect that residential gigabit speeds will bring, are their new paradigms that would make possible a much simpler way to manage access to our content and disparate services.

NCNGN Reverse Pitch Winners
Held in Greensboro and simulcast to Raleigh and Charlotte. Two winners received $19,000 each for prototype applications. Both prototype applications are complete and met their objectives. DroPark: A mobile app was developed that can reserve and pay for a parking spot while on route to the destination. The challenge was to develop a means of identifying vacant parking spots, determining that the spot is reserved and then occupied, and finally releasing the spot once it is vacated. This was accomplished through a combination of streaming video and use of the IBM Watson AI platform. PanoVR: This application demonstrates real-time collaboration between two or more participants within a 360-degree virtual space. The full collaborative experience and add-on annotations can be recorded and played back along with the original content.

US Ignite grants NCNGN has been awarded two US Ignite grants: $10,000 each. Designated for development of innovative GIG apps Rapid Updates of 3D City Base Maps Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems and Cloud Computing Services: The Center for Geospatial Analytics at NCSU is partnered with the City of Raleigh to build a solution that can update 3D GIS base maps in a short period of time. The solution uses drones, lidar and nadir imaging with gig networks and high-end processing to quickly update GIS maps 3D Drone Imaging for Emergency Management: Drones will be used to stream real-time video at the incident location. The video will be distributed real-time over gig networks to enable situational awareness and remote collaboration.
