Importance of Coursework
It is 20% of your final mark With commitment and effort it should be the highest scoring aspect of your 3 units (coursework, Tudor exam, America exam) Working hard and to deadlines this term and up until October half-term means that the final two terms will be fully focused on the exams. Learning these skills will mean you can successfully produce University Essays (researching, referencing, selecting material and sources, writing to a deadline, drafting and re-drafting work, proof reading)
4
Come up with questions about the coursework, these can be on:
How/what you need to research What it is you need to write How the coursework is assessed Planning your time/ approach Accessing extra support
5
How is your coursework marked?
There are 40 marks available for your coursework. There coursework splits those marks into 3 categories A01 – 20 marks A02 – 10 marks A03 – 10 marks A01 – see next slide! A02 – analysis of primary sources A03 – understanding of historians views and evaluation of them
6
A01 Most of what we are concentrating on this summer is A01:
Understanding and focus Answering the question and fully covering 100 years Organisation and Communication Well structured and points clearly communicated Knowledge/detail Well selected, specific and precise material to support your points (however lots of description will not get you many marks!) Analysis and conceptual understanding Consistently analysing events/developments in light of the question and demonstrating understanding of cause/consequences, change and continuity and significance Balance Look at multiple possible views (you cannot strongly argue one side) Judgement Make judgements relating to the Q supported with evidence
7
The Questions 1. In the context of , to what extent was the anti-Semitism of the German people during Nazi rule ( ) an anomaly? 2. In the context of , to what extent was Martin Luther King the most important Civil Rights leader? You will need to choose between these two questions in the next week during this period we will start building your understanding of their historical context What is your initial thought?
8
What will the final Coursework look like?
AQA guidance is that it should be 3500 words long (we aim to keep you to a maximum of 6000), It will contain: a number of themes (probably 3 or 4) that will compare events over a 100 year period, analyse them and reach supported judgements. 2 historians views will be examined in detail and the context/ limitations of these views will be evaluated. This will be integrated into your essay. 3 Primary Sources will be analysed in terms of their value in answering your question. These will be integrated into your themes. There will be footnotes on every page showing where you got your information from (books and webpages) There will be a bibliography with a full list of all the books and websites you have used in alphabetical order There will be a cover page with a word count, title, and your details on it (centre number, candidate number, name etc)
9
What do you already know?
German history Anti-Semitism in Germany American History The Civil rights Movement
10
Research A key skill that coursework helps you develop is research.
You need to find material as this is not a taught course: we will not go through all the history you need to know in lessons or put it in documents on the Blog. You need to keep a record of where you get information from: Books- Author, Book Title, (year published), Page number Articles- Author, Article title, Publication Title, (year published), page number Website- full web address, (date accessed) This is essential for your final piece of coursework
11
Research 2 You need to reference: Quotes Factual Detail Opinions
There should be lots of reference is your essay. A lack of references suggests a lack of work or cheating! Lots of references show that you’ve done lots of work.
12
Mini-Research Task Below are a list of events, using your phones and resources in the room: A) Find out what happened. B) Link the event to the question Anti-Semitism/ Germany Hep Hep Riots (1819) Germany united as a single country (1870) Weimar Constitution (1919) Nuremberg Laws (1935) Kristallnacht (1938) Wansee Conference (1942) Civil Rights Leaders Atlanta Compromise Speech (1895) Creation of the NAACP (1909) Double V Campaign (WW2) Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955) March on Washington (1963) Murder of Martin Luther King (1968) Jesse Jackson Presidential Candidacy (1992)
13
BY the Time we break up for Summer: You will have produced your first drafts of 3 themes
Anti-Semitism Violence Government/ Laws Press/ literature/ media Civil Rights Leaders (King) Communication Organisation Working with white leaders Each theme should be about 1000 words by the end of this term. In each theme you need to find events from across the 100 years present and argument relating to the question. You can have different arguments in different themes e.g. Anti-Semitic violence was an anomaly under the Nazis but the ideas in press and literature much less so.
14
Themes Below are a list of events, what themes would they link to?
Anti-Semitism/ Germany Hep Hep Riots (1819) Germany united as a single country (1870) Weimar Constitution (1919) Nuremberg Laws (1935) Kristallnacht (1938) Wannsee Conference (1942) Civil Rights Leaders Atlanta Compromise Speech (1895) Creation of the NAACP (1909) Double V Campaign (WW2) Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955) March on Washington (1963) Murder of Martin Luther King (1968) Jesse Jackson Presidential Candidacy (1984 and 1988)
15
Homework Carry out some research using a mixture of the internet and books on three events on the chronological table you are most likely to do Next lesson bring some referenced notes on what you have found. There must be references from both at least one book and at least one website
